Top Ten Favorite Christmas Movie Scenes

Image
Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals! It's that time of year again, and with the temperature outside being all over the place this month, Christmas movies have been a great way to trick the brain and get into the the holiday spirit. As with every great movie, there are a handful of scenes that keep you glued to the tv, waiting for that perfect cinematic moment that pulls you in every time. I've tried to put some variety in this list, so unfortunately the obvious choices like "It's a Wonderful Life" or any of the versions of "A Christmas Carol" were left off so they could make other, classier lists. Let's get to it!                             (Photo from Fandango.com) 10.  Die Hard - "Welcome to the Party, Pal!" There's been a big debate on the internet as to whether or not "Die Hard" is a Christmas movie or not. There are those who consider it to be one of the best Christmas movies of all time and then you have the people wh

Review- A Quiet Place: Part 2

Image
Continuing right after the events of the first movie, the Abbott family (lead by Emily Blunt) must venture out into the world in search of other survivors, all while trying to avoid the monsters that have wiped out most of the population. Up until yesterday afternoon, it'd been about 6 months since I'd gone to the movies. Since the last movie I saw there was Wonder Woman 1984 , it had been even longer since I'd seen a good movie in theaters. So when I saw that A Quiet Place: Part II  had finally been released after more than a year of sitting on the shelf, I made an excuse to go back. Luckily, Part II was worth the wait. First off, the movie carries on the tradition set by  Part I  of giving you scene after scene of unending anxiety. Not going to lie, I had an interview yesterday where 3 different guys were asking questions about how qualified I was for the job, and this movie was still the most stressful part of my day. It barely lets you settle in before it shows Day 1

Review-"The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It"

Image
Based on the real life case, the Warrens must help prove the innocence of Arne Johnson, a man claiming to have been possessed by the devil at the time that he committed a murder. The Conjuring (2013) is a modern horror classic. Not only are the scares genuinely terrifying, but it also features some great acting and an emotional story at its core. In short, it’s a tough one to beat, even for the other movies in its own series. To date, there have been 8 entries in The Conjuring universe, including spin offs for the Annabelle doll from the first entry and The Nun from the second. Unfortunately, none of them have come close to topping the original. So how does The Devil Made Me Do It compare? Since I hadn't heard much about this new entry and saw the middling reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, I assumed Devil Made Me Do It wouldn't be that great. And judging by the previews, it looked to be a rip off of The Exorcism of Emily Rose with it being half horror movie, half court case drama

AVATAR-Does It Hold Up?

Image
Back in 2009,  James Cameron's Avatar was nearly impossible to avoid. Whether you were like me and you tried to see every movie you could that year, or rarely went to the movies at all, you knew that Avatar was a big deal. Despite not being completely won over by the trailer, I was quickly caught in the hype machine surrounding it. I mean, when people describe seeing it in 3-D and all but comparing it to seeing the face of God, how else are you supposed to react? Even after seeing it, I was still hyped about how cool it looked and even got it on Blu Ray when it came out. (Which is depressingly becoming an old fashioned statement).  Looking back, though, it's crazy to think that it was that big of a deal. What was it that drew so many people to the movies to check it out? Was it just for the special effects? Was it the fictional world of Pandora? Was it the smack you over the head environmental message?  Avatar garnered a worldwide gross of nearly 3 BILLION DOLLARS and becam

The Last of Us Part 2- Masterpiece or Mistake?

Image
SPOILER WARNING The video game industry is no stranger to controversy. Going all the way back to Mortal Kombat in the 90s, with the now laughable pixelated blood and dismemberments, the "horrors" of what parents feared Grand Theft Auto exposed their innocent children to, and more recently with loot boxes and broken/unfinished games at launch. Lately though, the controversy surrounding some newer titles has become more nuanced, making ripping people's heads off in an arcade game almost quaint by comparison. And this is where The Last of Us Part II comes in. The original, released in 2013, is still deemed a masterpiece by gamers and critics. Not only did it provide intense gameplay and great level design with a post apocalyptic America as its backdrop, but it still serves as a milestone of how far video games have come in terms of storytelling. Showing how two survivors of a horrific outbreak can form a bond, even in the worst of times, onl

"A Song of Ice and Fire"-Is There an Ending in Sight?

Image
With nearly a ten year gap between installments in the book series, and a tv show finale that ranges from a disappointment to an unmitigated disaster (depending on who you ask) it's safe to say that A Song of Ice and Fire has seen better days. And with George RR Martin giving mixed signals to his fans on Twitter and on his blog, it's hard to tell where the future of this series rests. Although he stated in a recent tweet that he has made "steady progress" on the Winds of Winter , the next to last installment in the franchise, it's difficult to gauge how much progress has actually been made. Especially when Martin has made discouraging comments that he doesn't mind if the book series "remains unfinished". This is all the more frustrating when you take in the fact that in 2013 he disclosed in an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald that he doesn't want anyone continuing the books if he should pass before he finishes. Being a fan of

Top Ten Favorite Movies of the Decade

Image
Throughout the decade, we've seen some tremendous highs and breathtaking lows in the world of movies. Thanks to The   Avengers , we've seen superheroes dominate the box office, with their only competition being the return of Star Wars to the big screen. Amazing action movies like the Mission Impossible and John Wick franchises wowed us with thrilling fight scenes and face melting explosions. Even sci fi movies blew us away with Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival offering emotionally rich and intelligent stories. We've even seen Horror make a huge comeback, with monster hits like It and Get Out breaking records and even creepier entries such as The VVitch and Hereditary pushing the genre forward. Not to mention, we were able to experience the return of the greats like Tarantino, Fincher, Scorsese and Nolan throughout the decade as well. And luckily able to catch some smaller dramas like The Farewell and Manchester by the
